All the surviving records from the 18th and 19th centuries showed sixteen tenants with land ranging from 16 acres to over 500 and at the beginning of the 20th century there was a National Assessment of the valuation of all properties, known cynically at the time as ‘Lloyd George’s Domesday’. The valuation of Old Byland is shown below and the rents per acre of the farms have been calculated by dividing the valuer’s figure by the acreages and showing them at the right of the table.
