A complete record of every man, woman and child who was living in Old Byland in the middle of the 19th century and as little had changed during the previous two hundred years it is a useful guide to establishing the pattern of village life that first began to develop with the secularisation that followed the end of monastic control. Subsequent censuses taken at ten year intervals reveal that things remained virtually unchanged for the rest of the 19th century.
