An Act passed by parliament in 1836 allowed tithes to be converted into rent charge payments based on the prevailing and the award for Old Byland was made on 13 June 1846. The cultivated land apportioned by Henry Scott the estate manager amounted to 2,462 acres which was 666 acres more than the total recorded in 1772. All of the present-day farms can be clearly identified and their acreages were to remain virtually unchanged for the next 80 years.
